Help to build a school for vulnerable girls in Maasailand, Kenya

Requested by

Hope for Teenage Mothers (HTM)

Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?

We work with vulnerable young mothers and children, most of whom are between 13 and 18 years old. When these girls give birth their lives become hopeless as they are unable to continue with their education and frequently find it difficult to support their children. We want to ensure that young women who have given birth are not discriminated against and can continue with their education. We want to ensure that their children are educated, and we also want to ensure that the young mothers are well informed about safe sex.

The Maasai community is a marginalised group because of their culture and their pastoralism. They marry off their daughters from the age of 7. This means that the girls are not able to continue with education and by the time they are 13 years old they are already bearing children. This prevents them from pursuing their education and becoming independent. This has a negative economic impact on the community.

We want to work with young women from the Maasai community by building a boarding school where they will be taught skills that will help them in their future lives and allow young women who have already had children to continue with their education.

What is your project and how will it help?

Hope for Teenage Mothers wants to build a boarding school that will empower young women in terms of education and skills building. The school will enable young women from the Maasai community with children to continue with adult education and accelerated learning. This will mean that the women will be able to learn at their own pace and be examined when they are ready. The women will gain skills for independence and also acquire marketable skills and be economically empowered thus improving their livelihoods and that of the Maasai community.

How can other people partner with you on your project?

1.We require technical volunteers to build the school. They will work alongside members of the community. We have the land ready for this project donated by the Maasai community.

2. We also require partners to provide materials for construction.
