Vocational skills & jobs for vulnerable women and girls in Mukono district, Uganda

Requested by

Literacy Aid Uganda

Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?

Literacy Aid Uganda is a non-governmental and community based organization which was founded in 2000, in the central district of Uganda (Mukono district), after several outcries from women who needed help in knowing how to read and write. It provides basic adult education, advocates for the education of the girls and for HIV/AIDS awareness, vocational skills training, operates a micro credit scheme and operates a nursery school for disadvantaged children.

All through our work we have to face sad realities: due to illiteracy, most of women and girls cannot be employed in the formal sector and so the majority of them end up jobless and others, especially girls, end up in prostitution which increases their risk of contracting AIDS or getting married at a very teenage age.

By offering help to illiterate women and girls who are unemployed, we hope that they will be able to work and be independent.

This is why Literacy Aid Uganda seeks funding and assistance to address the issue of unemployment among these illiterate women and young girls and to make some of their dreams come true.

What is your project and how will it help?

Our project, called “Vocational skills training for women and young girls,” is simple: to improve the livelihoods of illiterate women and young girls through the utilization of different literacy activities to enable them to become self-reliant.

We believe that investing in education and social infrastructure for women and young girls is a key to breaking the cycle of poverty in Uganda. Indeed, Literacy Aid Uganda believes that with proper educational training, these people shall be well equipped with life skills for the future, which will help them to gain a better social position to either work on their own or have easy access to good jobs.

Moreover, though 92% of the beneficiaries are women and girls, Literacy Aid Uganda also aims to help men and young boys who have never been to school and wanted to, to get access to education through its services, especially in its adult literacy classes.

How can other people partner with you on your project?

Other people can partner with us by providing:
-Donations (specific items listed below)
-External assistance
-Furniture and basic equipment and materials

Moreover, partners can volunteer as advisers, co-workers and evaluators.

Please detail the resources that you need.

As explained in the attached proposal budget, Literacy Aid Uganda needs to purchase:
- Ovens
- Hair dryers
- Baking trays
- Charcoal
- Etc.

Total project cost is $9,149.
