Promoting local integration of disabled refugees and asylum seekers in Johannesburg South Africa

Requested by

Disabled Refugees Projects (DRP)

Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?

There are currently more than 700 refugees and asylum seekers living with severe disabilities in South Africa. They form the most marginalized and forgotten population in the wider disability community and tend to be overlooked or ignored by those supposed to render services to refugees and migrants in general. This population is at risk of starvation, xenophobic threats and HIV/AIDs vulnerability.

Our organization runs a shelter in Lenasia South, that provides accommodation for people with disabilities, many of whom are refugees and asylum seekers and were previously living in abandoned houses and on street corners. Subsequently they were not identified during data collection or included in needs assessments by humanitarian agencies. As a result, they were excluded from or unable to access most aid programs because of physical and social barriers, including negative attitudes.

We want to ensure that this group of people have an opportunity to learn about their rights, and to begin the process of integration into the wider society, and thus improve their life chances.

What is your project and how will it help?

This one year project is for refugees and asylum seekers living with disabilities in Gauteng, Johannesburg.
The project promotes integration of refugees and asylum seekers with disabilities through education on human rights, an HIV/AIDS awareness campaign, vocational training (Computer literacy) and strengthening the organizational advocacy strategy.

Full details of the project, the intended beneficiaries, and the plan for implementation can be found in the attached document.

How can other people partner with you on your project?
