Improve Health Conditions in Coastal and Tribal Villages, India

Requested by

Allan Rich Ministries Welfare Society (ARM)

Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?

Our project is concentrated to 250 costal and tribal villages of East Godavari, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam Districts. The major source of livelihood of the people in the districts is hunting, fishing and allied activities. The districts tribal people are also known for its backwardness in education and economy. Their economy is subsistence as the natural resources of the District are meager to support its population.

Among the population, women, children and handicapped people are the poorest of the poor. They are purely depending upon their family. Handicapped people lack support from their families as well as from the community. Government schemes reach them seldom.

What is your project and how will it help?

Health condition in the targeted villages is comparatively poor and needs more attention by the government as well as by the non-governmental organizations. However, a number of factors put the population of the target areas both at special risk for the poor health plight. These factors include population density, rudimentary housing, dwindling ways of making a living, poor sanitation and health care systems, and lagging literacy and education. Coastal dwellers have also traditionally been isolated from the rest of the district and are at the bottom of the region’s socio-economic ladder.

Overall we will attempt to help in following areas:

1. Higher quality health care services for the general population
2. Lowered maternal mortality and morbidity rates
3. Improved EPI coverage
4. Lowered infant and children-under-5 mortality rates
5. Local capacity building to increase skills to provide health care
6. The development of a referral network for obstetrical emergencies
7. The initiation of community financing mechanisms
8. Increased awareness among rural households on basic primary health care
