Shekel: Community Service for People with Special Needs is a non-profit organization assisting thousands of people with disabilities around Israel. SHEKEL operates a community living program with 45 units, including 4 units for severely disabled children, 4 vocational rehabilitation centers, 70 cultural, social and sports clubs, an extended school day in 11 special education schools and kindergartens, a respite and emergency care center, a mental health program, a program for the homeless and an accessibility program. Individualized programs are designed for each person. The SHEKEL Trauma Treatment Center opened in 2006 to help children and adults, with special needs, who experienced abuse (physical, emotional, verbal or sexual) or neglect. The center also offers treatment and counseling to family members and professional staff (from housing or vocational programs) serving them
