Poultry farming project in Nkasi, Tazania

Requested by

Nkasi Association of Non-Govenrmental Organisations

Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?

Nkasi National Association of Non Governmental Organization is a non profit organization with a focus on working with teenage youths. It is dedicated to promote educational and health programmes for the Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) and youths in Nkasi district. The organization started its operations to respond to the needs of OVC and Youths who were destitute because of the AIDS epidemic. At the present we have identified 500 children and youths (220 boys and 280 girls, with ages ranging from 1 month to 21 years) that are in need of support.

We aim to increase the sustainability of the organization and to reduce the dependence on donor funding, to continuously support our programs to address the physical, material and educational needs for OVC and youths. In addition, some of the youths out of school are unemployed and in lack of productive venture so as to support themselves. It puts some of the youths especially girls at high risk for contracting HIV and other STDs.

What is your project and how will it help?

The project is to establish a business to raise and sell chickens and eggs, and to use its profits to help support the activities of Nkasi National Association of Non Governmental Organization. In the first phase, the project will create employment for at least 30 youths and OVC currently not employed in any productive venture and have no opportunities to continue secondary education in business and management. This employment will provide training and give them an alternative way to generate income, decreasing their dependence on hand outs, and thereby decreasing their risk (especially girls) of transmitting and contracting HIV/STDs.

How can other people partner with you on your project?

Nkasi National Association of Non Governmental Organization will partner with the District Department for Agriculture, livestock, fisheries and cooperative, which has experts in agriculture and animal husbandry. The organisation has already consulted with the head of department on the issues of seeking the support of these experts.

The organization will also partner with community groups to draw on the experiences of these partners to help in the training and development of this project as well as its progress.

Also the project will partner with the orphans and youth who are the main beneficiaries of this project.

These relationships will help to ensure this project is successful.
