Help to Improve Nutrition , Food Security and Income for Poor Rural Farmers in Kenya
Requested byCommunity Sustainable Development Empowerment Programme
Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?
COSDEP through this project will endeavour to empower the farmers of central Kenya with knowledge and skills. This will enable them to reverse the trend towards food insecurity, environmental degradation and resultant poverty by implementing organic farming methods as a sustainable form of agriculture. The overuse of dangerous and expensive pesticides has caused the loss of bio diversity on farming land, hence natural imbalance and poisoning. Poor farming methods have also caused erosion, soil infertility and desperately low yields; denying the farmers income and an inability to meet their financial obligations.
Above all, lack of organic agriculture skills and information on how to break this vicious circle is the greatest challenge facing them.
What is your project and how will it help?
The strategy is to reclaim soil potency and increase production of safe food for all while improving the environment by incorporating agro forestry. We also want to transfer knowledge, ideas and experience and share these.
The target group of farmers will be shown how sustainable farm-ecology can be achieved and maintained through the use of cheap and locally available resources within and around the farm, using environmentally friendly inputs, proper tillage, cropping and management practices. This will not only ensure healthy food but also a good income, a clean environment and a secure future for generations to come.
How can other people partner with you on your project?
By facilitating our activities in terms of funds to travel to the farmers groups to train them, buy them equipment and seeds and provide them with reading materials.
We can partner with other organizations that we can link the farmers with after training for marketing of their surplus produce and on energy conservation.
