Requested byReclaim Childhood
Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?
Reclaim Childhood is a non profit that seeks to extend the benefit of sport and play to young women in displaced and underserved communities in Jordan. Our mission is to empower young women through sport, and inspire a new generation of female leaders.
Since 2008 we have offered organized sports programs for Iraqi refugee girls ages 8-18, and have recently opened our programs to Syrian refugees as well as the local population to foster integration and cooperation between divided communities.
What is your project and how will it help?
Reclaim Childhood: Sports for Girls by Girls (RCSGG) will be a series of 4 one-week sports camps targeting a total of 400 Iraqi girls between ages 8 to 18 who are living as refugees in Zarqa and East Amman, Jordan. The sports camps will be held at three separate locations and include soccer, self-defense, basketball, volleyball, and squash. Local female Iraqi refugees and Jordanians who have recently graduated from college but have no previous work experience will serve as community mobilizers and coaches to market, organize, and manage the camp activities. Each community mobilizer will lead a team of ten girls who will plan, practice, and compete together throughout the week. Girls will work towards preparing for the final competition at the end of the week. The camp will stress fair play, teamwork, cooperation, and GIRL POWER!
RCSGG sports camps are designed to empower girls through sports to gain self-confidence develop marketable skills for young local women to close the gender gap in the workforce, and establish connections across divided communities.
How can other people partner with you on your project?
We are a small organization, so any amount of advice and support is appreciated!
1) We welcome in-kind donations of sports equipment, sports shoes, uniforms as well as snacks for the campers.
2) We are seeking advice for material to run a coaching clinic to train local young women to lead the league! We are seeking advice on leadership training, team building activities, and techniques for using sports to foster cooperation and confidence building. The clinic begins June 10th 2012, so we want to compile a comprehensive manual before this date.
