Barbour began, a British family-owned business, in 1894 in the Market Place in South Shields. Today the 5th generation family owned business remains in the read, with Barbour’s headquarters located in Simonside, South Shields. Barbour makes high quality clothing and accessories designed for country life. The company sells a wide range of of casual clothing including shirts, jackets, trousers, knitwear, bags and hats, and sells its products world-wide.

It is Barbour’s goal to constantly improve the company’s environmental performance and to manage the company’s activities to prevent and minimise wherever practicable, the effects of those activities on the environment. Barbour aims to meet and where possible, exceed the requirements of all relevant environmental legislation and strives to make good environmental practice a priority.

Barbour also has a charitable foundation, founded in 1988. The aims and objectives of the trust are:
“The relief of patients suffering from any form of illness or disease; the furtherance of general education of children & young people; the protection and preservation for the benefit to the public, features of cities, towns, villages and the countryside that are of special environmental historical or architectural interest; the relief of persons in conditions of need, hardship or distress in the UK” (Barbour Foundation).
