Partnership to help farmers in Africa increase crop yields and hope for the future

In 2005, Millennium Promise launched with a vision to end extreme poverty in our lifetime. As the leading international nonprofit organization solely committed to supporting the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, Millennium Promise believes that innovative partnerships and an inclusive approach are the keys to success.

Millennium Promise’s flagship initiative, the Millennium Villages Project (MVP), supports integrated social and business development services for more than 500,000 people in rural communities across 10 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. In overseeing the MVP, Millennium Promise collaborates with a growing alliance of partners from the public and private sectors who bring support in many forms, from technological and advisory to financial and in-kind.

Two partners among the most important to the long-term success of the Project are Agrium from Canada and Mosaic from the US. These two fertilizer companies are assuring that tens of thousands of smallholder farmers have access to two critical types of fertilizer, urea and DAP. By donating large quantities of fertilizer to the project, distributed by Millennium Promise along with farmer training services, the generosity of Agrium and Mosaic has directly led to significantly improved crop yields, better livelihoods, and greater hope for the future.

Agrium (Canada) will be increasing its donation from its current 500,000 USD to 1 million USD in 2011. Agrium is partnering with Millennium Promise to provide Urea fertilizer and cover the shipment costs to the villages of Sauri, Kenya and Pampaida, Nigeria.

Mosaic (USA) currently partners with the Millennium villages in Mali, Nigeria, Uganda, Malawi, Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia, impacting over 300,000 people. The company donates fertilizer and the associated logistics costs for a commitment of 2.1 million USD in 2010. Mosaic also provides 400,000 USD in support for village clusters in Guatemala and India as well as providing assistance and training in best practices (nutrient use, irrigation).

Millennium Promise’s growing alliance of public, private, and nonprofit partners all share a commitment to sustainable development and scaling up effective ideas. Through these partnerships, they are working to help empower communities to achieve new frontiers of opportunity, laying the foundation for innovations and local entrepreneurship.
