Palli Unnayan Samiti Baruipur

Unverified non-profit organisation

Palli Unnayan Samiti Baruipur (PUS) is the Social Service Society of Catholic Diocese of Baruipur. It is a non-profitable and charitable social work organisation operating since its inception in 1978 in the district of South 24 Parganas, 4 blocks of North 24 Parganas and 2 Police stations under Kolkata Metropolitan.

The objective of PUS is to promote first and foremost the development of people, irrespective of caste and creed, giving special attention to the more depressed rural sector and to women in particular. Initially, a relief and charity approach was adopted to rehabilitate the women and children in their accepted respectable social status. Later on the philosophy and working approach has gradually shifted its stand from charity to sustainable development. The objective of the organisation has been to bring about change in people’s attitude and enhance their capacity for meaningful participation in their development. PUS believes in the empowerment of the poor, marginalised and downtrodden people, especially the women folk, children. It is possible to guide the communities to initiate their own development process, actualise democratic concepts viz. human rights, dignity of person and social justice, especially among the poor and the marginalised specially women, children and youth. The main focus has been to expose the people to a process of changing attitudes, acquiring knowledge through trainings and orientation so that they are made aware about their felt needs and their potentiality. The process of empowerment includes encouraging the people, especially the women folk and children, to form groups and interlinking them with various support agencies, conducting capacity building exercises and guiding them to plunge into different developmental activities. Flood, cyclone, high tide and erosion of the River Embankment are very common in the coastal part of the district of South 24 Parganas. So Palli Unnayan Samiti Baruipur also renders its service with food, cloth, drinking water, family survival kits, shelter, medicine etc. to the victimised families as Relief and Rehabilitation.
