Open Source Education Project- for Schools/Regions Without Internet Access

General information

Overall description

In a great number of schools, in regions throughout the world, students often gain access to computers far before gaining access to the Internet- due to the infrastructure necessary to install Internet access in remote locations. Unfortunately, this severely restricts the amount of educational resources available to these students. Therefore, our intiative is testing a new solution to this problem- downloading the web’s major educational resources (e.g. Khan Academy, Wikipedia, Instructables, digital textbooks, etc…) to a series of DVDs/CDs, and shipping this DVD/CD series to any school or community which seeks access to the Internet’s tremendous educational capacity, however does not have direct access to the Internet. The content of this DVD/CD series will be customized according to the requests of the relevant community/school. If you represent such a community or school, I highly encourage you to send us a message describing your situation and the ages/grade levels of your students. We are able to provide content for ages ranging from elementary school to university. Please note that unfortunately, we are not in a position to provide computers- these must be obtained separately and must contain either a CD/DVD player or a USB port (preferably a CD/DVD player). There will be no charge associated with any portion of this process, including shipping.

Graham Link says: SuhoG Project: Certainly. The DVDs are loaded with several thousand educational videos from The Khan Academy, on a range of science and math topics, as well as a copy of Wikipedia, tens of digital textbooks, hundreds of digital books, and additional content on any topic you specify. These DVDs will be compatible with any computer or operating system, and will have a special menu for selecting Khan Academy videos. There will also be an application for Wikipedia. Again though, we can customize and add information and videos on any topic you wish.

Abang Ashu Academy: We'd love to help. What ages are your students? Is there any specific educational content you'd like on the DVDs, besides our standard content? Also, is the address you've given above the address we should ship to?

Graham Link says: Abang Ashu Academy: Wonderful. We will send you a copy of the DVD set in the first few weeks of the new year. The files on the DVD set can then be transferred to multiple computers- the DVDs will be designed for this. Unfortunately, due to copyright restrictions, we cannot send copyright programs such as Mavis Beacon or Windows. We can, however, send you the best Open Source applications available- in addition to the learning guides you requested. We look forward to working with you!

SuhoG Project: The DVDs are not client/server compatible, as we've sought to make the set as functional and easy-to-use as possible. Therefore, the DVDs will mainly be an organized collection of files, with a specific application for viewing Wikipedia. Other applications for viewing the files will also be included, such as VLC Player for the Khan Academy videos. I hope this response answers your question! And yes, we encourage you to take as much time as needed to determine any additional topics you'd like!

Graham Link says: World In Need International:
Thank you for your generous offer of linking us with your partners. Seeing as the total cost of shipping and creating a single DVD set is generally under $15 AUD, we would greatly appreciate the direct mailing addresses of any communities, in any location, which you believe may benefit from our offline education set. If this is too broad a scope, a particular area of initial focus would be the Asia-Pacific, as we are located in Australia. To answer your question on the DVD's area restrictions, all DVDs will be formatted for universal compatibility in all eight DVD regions. Also, we will likely send both a PAL and NTSC version of the DVD set, so as to absolutely ensure their proper functioning. Once again, thank you for your offer, and we look forward to further correspondence.

Graham Link says: Scholar Educational Services:: Could you please provide an email address at which we can contact you, so as to arrange delivery of the DVD set and discuss future partnership options?

Judith Sellanga: We are thrilled to hear of any comments or feedback regarding the DVD set, and would appreciate any further details of its use. Unfortunately, due to copyright restrictions, we are unable to ship the majority of standard software packages. However, if you describe the software, it may be possible to find Open Source equivalents which we are able to distribute instead.

    Shepherds Heart
    Unverified non-profit organisation

Michelle Pillay says: Shepherds Heart is a community outreach program that was established in 2012 to address the needs and challenges that face the poor and needy in Phoenix Durban South Africa.

A lot of our work involves working with people, especially youth and children who are disadvantaged and deprived. We help children see the potential they have and help them break the cycle of poverty, thus encouraging and supporting mentorship, education and a brighter, healthier future .

Many of the beneficiaries that we work with come from very difficult backgrounds. They are often growing up in homes or environments where they are easily and readily exposed to violence, alcohol, drugs and other social ills thereby making it extremely difficult for them to grow up in a strong social/family structure.

We believe that your resource will be a tremendous help for the children to channel their minds and thoughts towards education and research.

We work and partner with many disadvantaged schools in Durban and this tool will be a wonderful asset to educate and expose children to the otherwise restricted acess to the internet

We appeal to you to consider Shepherds Heart as a beneficiary in order to bring some thrills and smiles to these children. We believe that a resource of this nature will expose and broaden these young minds to experience a life changing event that will have a positive impact on their lives.

    Please consider us!
