The mission of the project (RHEP) is to help those in high risky HIV/AIDS Catchment areas. Rakai District in Uganda is a place where the infamous Kansensero Fishing site, a place known to be the origin of the HIV/AIDS in Africa (The HIV/AIDS Epicentre in Sub Saharan Africa). The district has many fishing and landing sites which are triggers of the disease putting many at risk of HIV/AIDS. Besides, the Impact of HIV/AIDS in the district has been severe more than anywhere else simply because from the day HIV was diagnosed to date the disease is still there in the district. This has left many young people Orphaned among these some were born with the disease, while those who escaped it at birth, have been exposed to it in trying to fend for themselves by working in Bars, Hotels, Saloons at these fishing sites where at night or even during the day they engage in sexual activities to top up their daily income. This level of risk in this area calls for urgent intervention.
HealthCare Volunteer Uganda intervened and has previously made connections in the area, and now sends volunteer medical staff to clinics throughout the region. We aim to build on these partnerships in order to implement an education and prevention program in the District, in line with the Uganda National Strategic Framework for HIV/AIDS activities. This program will begin as a year long project, which will be expanded into other areas in future years if successful.
The program aims to educate the population, especially the population of orphaned young girls that are running their households, in order to reduce the rate of increase of HIV/AIDS and other STIs in the area. We will achieve this through identifying and training local parish workers, education and support in local schools and youth clubs and through training of health staff in clinics in order to provide increased access to HIV services in the district.
To kick start this proposed project (RHEP) needs 65,316 $ for a period of one year.
