Toyota works with National Center for Family Literacy to provide support for family literacy programs

Since 1991, TMA (Toyota Motor North America) has helped the National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL) develop model programs throughout the country, resulting in the establishment of the Toyota Family Literacy Program (TFLP), a literacy initiative focused on Hispanic and other immigrant families.

NCFL is an organization that has pioneered the concept of family literacy, to establish model programs throughout the country. Toyota invested $36 million to create 256 program sites and establish best practices used in countless other programs. Those programs have leveraged more than $229 million in additional investment to sustain and expand family literacy.

Family literacy integrates adult education, children’s education and parent training into one comprehensive program. In family literacy programs, parents and children work and learn together, giving parents an opportunity to actively participate in their children’s educational development, improving their own skills at the same time.

In March 2003, the Toyota Family Literacy Program (TFLP), designed for Hispanic/Latino and other immigrant families, was begun with a US$3.2 million contribution from TMA. The program was initiated in five cities across the nation in the same year: Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Washington DC and Providence.

In year 2011, NCFL and Toyota celebrated a 20-year partnership. Today, this partnership accounts for 256 family literacy sites in 50 cities and 30 states.
