Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?

Lack of clean water and sanitation facilities are key factors in keeping people in the Kisii community poor, unhealthy and unable to improve their livelihoods. It causes a great percentage of diseases and kills more people every year than anything else. Children are especially vulnerable, as their bodies aren’t strong enough to fight diarrhoea, dysentery and other illnesses. Most deaths that occur in the hospitals and at the homes every week from unsafe water and unhygienic living conditions are to children under five years old. Many of these diseases can be prevented simply by improving water supply and sanitation.

Women and children usually bear the burden of water collection, walking miles and taking them hours, to the nearest source which is unprotected and likely to make them sick. Time spent walking and resulting diseases keep them from school, work and taking care of their families. Along their long walk, the women are subjected to a greater risk of harassment and sexual assault. Hauling cans of water for long distances takes a toll on the spine and many women experience back pain early in life. With safe water nearby, women will be free to pursue new opportunities and improve their families’ lives. Kids will earn their education and build the future of their communities.

What is your project and how will it help?

We are appealing for funding to assist us finish our water project. With the help of well wishers, we have drilled a borehole to the depth of 180 meters and got sufficient water to serve our local church, our Day Care Center and the entire community. We are, however, yet to complete the water project as we are lacking funding for a submersible pump with accessories, pipes and tank for distribution and the means to power the submersible pump — both estimated at costing USD $10,000.
