The International Committe of the Red Cross (ICRC) is a Swiss-based humanitarian organisation with offices in many countries worldwide. Its mission is to work on a strictly neutral basis to protect and assist people affected by armed conflicts and internal disturbances. It directs and coordinates international relief activities related to the distribution of safe water, food and medical assistance. In Timor-Leste, the ICRC additionally visits detainees and assesses their treatment and living conditions and reports its findings to the authorities concerned. The organization is supporting the creation of a national mechanism to clarify the fate of people unaccounted for between 1975 and 1999.
