The United Nations Fund for Women was established in 1976. The Fund provides finance and technical assistance to foster women’s empowerment and gender equality. UNIFEM has been working through a regional office in Brazil since 1992, focusing on projects aimed at poverty reduction among women and HIV/AIDS prevention, encouraging women’s participation in government at all levels and reducing domestic violence.
